AAJ 220. Law and Justice in Africa

Examination of the philosophical base of African customary law. Traditional theories of crime prevention, punishment, and the dispensation of justice in selected precolonial African societies. The enforcement of laws by the traditional community and traditional courts, and community involvement in the prevention of crime. African laws under colonialism and in contemporary independent nations. (Offered Spring 2007.) 

Prerequisite: English 101. In addition: African-American Studies History 195 or permission of the section instructor.
